Vias ferrata

Vias ferrata gear

The via ferratas are a fantastic mountain activity but, for your practice, we need a series of essential, inescapable or fundamental material to enjoy them with the greatest possible safety.

The first material for via ferrata is the harness. It must be adjustable both in the leg and waist area. In addition, you should have a good padding in the lower back. The harness must be approved, and from Vertic we recommend that it be no more than five years old.

The harness must be ergonomic and comfortable, being well adjusted both in the leg and waist area. It should not fall, but it should provide as much freedom of movement as possible.

The dissipaters are another material for via ferrata. In the market there are different models, and they are the element that gives us the greatest security.

In case of fall, the dissipaters absorb all the energy that our body generates in the collapse through a mechanical mechanism or, in the most evolved, thanks to a textile component that breaks when falling.

From a dissipator you must also take into account their carabiners. When the trigger of the carabiner is squeezed, it must be opened easily; but, when we release it, its opening must be impossible. So, when we put them on the metal elements, once loose, it never opens. In case of fall, all the textile element sewn into the bag dissipates our energy.

How is a heatsink used? Its use is simple, but it must be done correctly. It is placed between the ring of the lower part of the harness -the leg area- and the upper part, so that it is at the height of the hands and we can put the carabiners on the metal elements.

From Vertic we do not recommend the use of any baga without heat sink, since in case of fall we would speak of a fall of factor two at least; that is, we can suffer fractures in the area of ??the back. It is a fundamental element at the security level.

The helmet is another material for via ferrata. Although, from Vertic, we recommend its use for all types of activities in the mountains. The most important of the helmets: it has to adjust well and protect the different areas.

During the practice of this sport activity fatigue makes a dent. To enjoy small breaks we can hang from our heatsink without any problem.

What happens sometimes? We are afraid, the size of the dissipator does not go well with the anchorage ... therefore, in the market there are bagas sewn with carabiners at the tip. This allows that, used with the harness, we hang and rest.

However. We should never hang only on the baga. The heatsink must always be anchored, regardless of the use of the baga, to rest. The heatsink must always be activated, since we never know when we can suffer a fall.

When there are stirrups and steel cables, from Vertic we recommend the use of gloves. Our hands can suffer chafing and the appearance of sores. There are models designed and manufactured especially for this type of sports activity. Most models expose the fingers for a greater touch, something that facilitates the use of the material. However, they cover the palm of the hand; something we appreciate when we have been practicing for a few hours.

A thermal blanket is another necessary material for via ferrata. Neither occupies nor weighs. And if the weather is bad, we are bad or we are injured, it protects us both from the heat and the cold. Very economical and necessary material.

In addition to the mentioned elements, from Vertic we also recommend carrying a backpack, water to avoid dehydration, food, sunglasses, gels and everything you consider appropriate to enjoy this sporting activity.
